One alumna, Marne Coit, has established herself as a seasoned specialist providing business advising and consulting services to growing hemp and cannabis businesses.

As the founder and principal of Coit Consulting LLC, Marne is heavily involved in hemp & cannabis policy at the state and federal level. Marne offered some insights into her work, including working with Agricultural Hemp Solutions in conjunction with IND Hemp and the National Hemp Association on the Industrial Hemp Act of 2023 (now S.980), which would change how hemp grown for grain and fiber would be regulated, with the anticipated goal of removing regulatory barriers for farmers.

Marne began working in hemp and cannabis law in her previous role as a faculty member at NC State University where she taught food law and agricultural law and developed and ran the NC State Extension Hemp Law Program after North Carolina began their Industrial Hemp Pilot Program under the 2014 Farm Bill. This opportunity was unique in that it was the only Extension program in the country that focused on hemp law at that time.

The rapid development and constant changes in the law required a quick response, and she believes her LL.M. in Agricultural and Food Law enabled her to quickly step in to this area and get up to speed on the relevant law.

The Extension and Pilot programs grew rapidly, increasing from less than 100 licensed growers in 2017 to 1,500 growers by 2020. In this role, Marne provided training for farmers, law enforcement, and attorneys. She also served as a policy advisor to the North Carolina Industrial Hemp Commission.

In addition to impacting federal hemp policy, Marne also teaches cannabis law and hemp law at Wake Forest University School of Law and Michigan State University College of Law as an adjunct professor. Marne serves on the business advisory board for ExstoBio, a B2B SaaS setting the standard in cannabinoid therapeutics. She also recently wrote a chapter on Legal and Regulatory Oversight for the book “Industrial Hemp: Food and Nutraceutical Applications.”

We want to congratulate Marne on all her recent accomplishments, and we look forward to her continued success as her practice grows alongside the emerging industries!

Our LL.M. Program in Agricultural and the Food Law Society at the University of Arkansas present award-winning journalist, Anna King, host and creator of the Ghost Herd podcast. Check out the podcast at ghostherd.org.

Ghost Herd chronicles the story of Cody Easterday, a powerful rancher in rural Washington state and the man at the center of one of the largest cases of agricultural fraud in U.S. history. Easterday defrauded major companies out of nearly a quarter billion dollars by inventing a “ghost herd” of 265,000 cattle that only existed on paper. However, we pride ourselves on the connections that our students make with each other and their professors. In order to foster these connections, our asynchronous professors schedule optional video chat sessions to discuss the course, get to know each other, and have time for Q&A. Our first this semester is with Professor Amy Lowenthal who teaches our online Ag Labor course. The class got together via zoom to meet Amy and to discuss the award-winning historical video, Harvest of Shame.

Susan Schneiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03569705265710410394noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3781776996093989237.post-54529237424021255712024-01-30T08:00:00.001-06:002024-01-30T08:00:00.182-06:00LLM Alum Javier Rivera-Aquino To Teach Agricultural Law Class

This semester, LL.M. In class last week, the students learned about the Holodomor, the man made famine in Ukraine in 1932-33 when on Stalin's order, millions of people were starved to death. From this lesson in history, they moved to a current discusson to explore some of the Russo-Ukrainian War’s impacts on Ukrainian agriculture.

Susan Schneiderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03569705265710410394noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3781776996093989237.post-22452884087135202792024-01-22T10:58:00.001-06:002024-01-22T10:58:20.185-06:00Time to Apply for Fall 2024!

We are now accepting applications for Fall 2024 LL.M. enrollment.
